GUNNAR
The Art Of Story Telling
Creative story telling techniques for artistic tattooing

Gunnar will be doing his "Story Telling" seminar at Hell City 2012 in Killumbus. "Story Telling" is a lecture/ dialogue driven approach to sharing his artistic process for designing story telling images. The information is formatted in a way that artists can relate to and apply to their artwork. This seminar covers everything from: meeting with clients and extracting important information, use of appropriate imagery and symbolism, use of proper materials and reference, to building a drawing through a step by step process. Along the way, Gunnar will share stories, inspirational artists he feels are worth noting, and touch down softly on the ethics within our industry (maybe not so softly). Art should be a fun and creative process and Gunnar will try and create a learning environment that conveys this to other artists.
Here are some Testimonials from people that have taken Gunnar's seminar:
I pay to go to seminars to hear a lot of what I already know and one thing I don't know, in Gunnars seminar I took with me not one but seven things to use to help me advance my career, well worth the price and then some! It was great because it broke it down to fundamentals that were easily comprehendable from initial consult to finished product, it also gave me new insight to how to design for the client and different ways to talk to them so as to better understand the meaning behind the imagery they want in their tattoo. you also made me feel i should be more comfortable in my drawing skills something which i constantly criticize myself for because i don't really like my style (where now i understand i should just keep drawing to refine that style instead of getting frustrated with myself and not committing to getting better), and honestly when it comes to your randomness i really didn't mind because i'm pretty random so i was able to keep up, if you had stayed on track the whole time i may have gotten bored lol. - John Lucero
"Way beyond what I expected to learn about composition/planning layouts for tattoos. Gunnar was charming and elaborated in detail." - Cecilia Galindo
It was an honor and pleasure to spend some learning time with mr Gunnar ! - Cesar Valverde

For over a decade Gabe Ripley has been immersed in the business of tattooing. After a freelance computer programming career in the US and Europe, Gabe first stepped into the tattoo business world in 2001 by creating TattooNOW, a technology business that currently powers over 100 tattoo industry websites around the world and has since helped tattooers generate millions of dollars in business. In 2005, based on the success of TattooNOW's websites, Ripley opened Off the Map Tattoo. By constantly improving the studio's business practices, it now boasts over 50 guest artists a year, and a growing business in a slowing economy. Not one to settle, in 2008 Ripley started using the same business practices to produce two yearly events, the Paradise Tattoo Gathering and Paradise Artist Retreat. These events are focused on four days of responsible tattoo and art education and have earned an international reputation. Gabe presented this seminar to over 200 artists at the first Worldwide Tattoo Conference in Rome in October 2011. "Everybody gave me good feedback because you gave to the artists good, easy, and interesting suggestions!" said Alex DePase the conference's promoter of the business seminar.

* Sample management action plan.

CHRIS DINGWELL
A seminar for painters of all kinds...
CHRIS DINGWELL has been a tattoo artist for the over 17 years, but long before that, he was a painter, and an artist in many other mediums; graduating with both Bachelor's and Mater's degrees in Fine Arts before ever picking up a tattoo machine.
"In this business, I meet other tattoo artists all the time who ask me about my painting. Consistently what I hear them tell me is that they would love to learn how to paint, but they are "AFRAID" Can you believe that? Every single day, we risk permanently scarring up other people's bodies, or at the very least, covering them with just plain bad art. We work in one of the most exhaustively challenging mediums there is; human flesh. So how can we possible be afraid of some brushes and Canvas?"
I've created this seminar to challenge and inspire artists working at all skill levels. It doesn't matter if you've been painting for years, or if you've never lifted up a brush in your life, there will be something to learn for everyone. If you are new to painting, and don't know how to start, I will wipe away your fears and show you how you can easily challenge yourself to get started and run with it. If you are an experienced painter who simply wants to try working from a different point of view, I will challenge you to tear up your old ideas of what painting and "ART" are supposed to be, and shake up your brain in ways that can free up your mind and your work, and lead you in new and exciting directions!
I will lead off this seminar with a brief slideshow of examples from throughout the art world, and then I will spend the majority of the time beginning a painting of my own from the first steps. I will be demonstrating my use of underpainting, along with other more intermediate and advanced techniques. All the while, demonstrating how simple these things can be. I am holding this seminar on Thursday Night so that it will not interrupt anyone's tattooing time, and also because I will be working on the finishing touches of this painting throughout the weekend, so anyone attending the seminar can come by and check in on the progress and see the final results. In essence, this seminar will continue throughout the weekend!
The seminar will last about THREE HOURS, and the cost is only $100. There is NO seating limit, and anyone can attend; convention artists, friends, visitors, and total outsiders.
ALL are welcome! THURSDAY NIGHT! August 25th, from 6-9pm.

Modern Tattooing Through the Lens of a Traditional Tattooer
Modern Tattooing Through the Lens of a Traditional Tattooer with an Emphasis on Longevity and Ethics.
During this two hour session I will cover my theories on how I’ve learned to apply traditional tattoo techniques towards modern everyday tattooing. This seminar will explore how using these techniques can provide longevity to updated tattoo styles, will focus on the importance of making a design work from sketch to skin and honing fundamentals . I will be discussing different ways to implement these techniques including, which needles and pigments I prefer, composition, flow and also including the use of black ink, hard lines, negative space, and skin highlights.
In my second section I will be covering how traditional tattoo techniques can also aide in constructing stylized portraits and pin ups that will withstand the test of time. I will be providing examples of certain tattoos I’ve done in the past and explain why some are aging better than others.
One of the more controversial, but important topics I will be discussing in this seminar is the oversaturation/bastardization of our craft. I will be discussing why it is so imperative to hold our craft sacred and how the sensationalizing of the tattoo world has both positive points and negative points.
The last couple topics I have to cover relate to the importance of working in other mediums and painting traditional flash.
Participants will be provided with a packet of information and a limited edition print done specifically for Hell City 2011, be encouraged to participate in a question and answer session towards the end of the seminar.

Dynamic Lighting & Shadowing
for Anatomical & Biomechanical Forms

This seminar will be a complete breakdown of my theories on the importance of light and how it works when falling over anatomical and biomechanical forms. The major topics will include a brief history of lighting effects applied in art, as well as discussing value theory and reference development. The goal of this seminar is to help the student better understand the reasons why I make the decisions with color and value, and how those decisions work on the form I am illustrating and tattooing.
The seminar covers my theory of light and how it responds to form, inventing light sources, building form, and how to discern the shape of a value. It will be heavily based on value theories. This seminar will also based on drawing techniques that can be applied to any medium.
Main forms to be studied are the eye, the face, and the hand to better understand their anatomy and importance in illustrating figures. I will also cover a heavy study of a few common biomechanical forms.
Every student will receive a study packet with notes and illustrations about topics covered. Also, students will be encouraged to take notes, so bring a sketchbook,
some pencils and erasers to participate in the lesson and be able to get more hands on knowledge, and one-on-one feedback.

"HAND TATTOOS"

The seminar will be based on 'Hand Tattoos' rather than a specific technique or style. Hands have seem to be this elusive object in tattooing, also sacred at the same time. I feel that i have had some good luck with hands, and bad... but I have learned how to get them in there proper, so I want to teach the rest of the tattoo community what I know... I will be doing everything from how I go about preparing for and designing the tattoo, placement, set up from my machines, needles, ink, why I use these items specifically and how I use them, photographing the tattoo, healing tricks for hands, basically anything and everything I know about hand tattoos. This will be about an hour to hour and half long, each attendee will receive an informational packet with everything I cover from the seminar. Also, after the seminar I will be tattooing a hand tattoo at my booth, allowing anyone and everyone to come by and see the techniques first hand.

CHRIS DINGWELL
"KIDS DON'T DO THIS AT HOME" SEMINAR

In his brand new, never before offered seminar, Chris Dingwell will talk about his fifteen odd years of tattooing experience, as well as his paintings and his artistic background, and how it has made him the artist that he is today. Chris Dingwell is a unique figure in the tattoo community. He has a graduate degree in Fine Arts from Ohio State University, and has taught college level art courses for several years before diving headlong into the tattoo world. He began tattooing in 1993 in Columbus Ohio. He has travelled extensively and worked with many great figures in the tattoo industry, including Guy Aitchison, Corey Kruger, Julie Moon, and many more.
This seminar will present a pre-view of the forthcoming book about acrylic painting techniques that Chris Dingwell and Cory Kruger are co-writing. The book will be published later in the year by Guy Aitchison's Proton Press. This seminar is for anyone who is at all interested in painting, from first timers looking for a place to start to the seasoned veteran who is looking to expand in new directions. Chris has a distinct and very personal, non-traditional approach to painting. He will encourage you to experiment and challenge yourself with acrylics in ways that will be able to give you a wide path to follow, with lots of possibilities to explore.
He will debunk the myths about the medium and discuss the advantages of acrylic paint and how it can work for you. He will discuss a wide variety of materials, techniques, and approaches to the medium that are available today; showing examples through slides and live demonstration. Covering everything from composition and color to layering, glazing, and working with mixed materials, he will discuss various approaches to painting and art making with a strong focus on experimentation and working WAY outside the box. He will be discussing ideas that can be applied to help improve any kind of art making, including your tattooing.
Participants are encouraged to contribute their thoughts and questions to this lively discussion about the ins and outs of acrylic painting. This should be an entertaining as well as informative event for any artist, no matter how new or old.
For a better look at his work, both as a painter and tattoo artist, you can find him at www.chrisdingwell.com
